Join Dawn as she welcomes back Mary Cook, author of “Grace Lost and Found: From Addictions and Compulsions to Satisfaction and Serenity” for part 2 of our look into addiction.
In Part 1 we learned how to differentiate between something we enjoy doing, a craving and an addiction.
When we do something for pure enjoyment we are free to make choices and we are completely relaxed about the decision and outcome. A craving is elicited by an internal or external association, something we either feel or see.
We also learned that our brains are constantly reminding us of the behaviors we normally engage in, for example, having a glass of wine with dinner or having a cigarette after.
Cravings turn to addiction when we choose to indulge in them repeatedly and without thought. The more we respond to a craving, the higher the chance we may form an addiction.
Addiction is when we lose choice, control and awareness. We start pushing away people that we care about, like our friends, family and kids. We start scheduling our lives around our addictions. and in part 2, we are going recap what we have learned in the first part but now delve deeper into what really constitutes an addiction and we’ll also do a mini-workshop to help us understand and start taking action.
If you are ready to understand addiction and do something about it, this is a show you will want to hear.
Write your positive associations to your addiction.
When is the earliest time of your life that you felt a lack of the above positive associations, & what were the circumstances?
In what circumstances have you felt the desired positive associations in healthy ways without the addiction?
In what circumstances have you felt the most safe, healthy, happy, loved, loving & fulfilled?
What are your greatest fears or concerns about surrendering your addiction?
What are the things that support & reinforce your addiction?
What are the things that support & reinforce your freedom from addiction?
Freedom from addiction allows what positive, healthy changes in you & your life?
Suggestions from Insight:
Speak honestly with someone who understands your addiction & participate in individual or group support to heal trauma & stress without the addiction.
Suspend your addiction as much as possible & practice positive healthy alternative experiences.
Know & feel that your soul & your God are greater than your addiction, & that you are whole, holy & loved divinely. Practice giving your addiction to God.
Change or remove either the supports & reinforcements for your addiction, or your response to them, & replace them with support for your freedom from addiction.
Practice relaxation, exercise, spend time outside in nature, breathe, release tension, identify what is uplifting, inspirational, joyful & rejuvenating in healthy ways & put that in your life regularly, pray & meditate, to expand positive energy & support freedom from addiction.
What is the vision & feeling of you at your healthiest, highest best: mentally, emotionally, behaviorally, physically & spiritually? You may imagine it as a movie, write it, draw, sculpt, dance, sing, make a collage of it, etc.
Practice asking yourself “who am I?”. When your addiction tempts you, ask what part of you is tempted & what part of you feels whole & fulfilled. Envision both these parts of yourself & let the whole you help the smaller part of you to see the larger truth.
Pray for God’s will to work through you, removing anything that interferes with it.
Commit to making full, positive, healthy use of all that God gives you & share it with the world.
Not only does what you desire from the addiction not really exist there, & not only is what you desire truly available today in your adult life, but what you most desire is deep inside you always.
ARE YOU ADDICTED
This week, Dawn is going to open up about her main addiction but also delve into what exactly is addiction and what resources can we use to over come addictive behaviors. Chances are, if we are addicted to one thing, we are addicted to many things. Mary Cook will bring over 36 years experience to Soulgineering Radio to help us see if We are Hooked.
How do we know when we are just having cravings or just really enjoy something a lot as opposed to having a addiction?
Does addiction only apply to certain areas; like drugs, alcohol and sex? Is there such a thing as a harmless addiction? Can you be addicted to television, certain foods, video games, texting, etc…?
If we think we have addiction, how do we get help? What if we have no money to pay for expensive recovery treatments?
What are positive ways to help someone when you think they have an addiction? What are things we should avoid doing?
BONUS TOOLS: Wanna get past that pesky craving? Brigitte Nadeau, EFT specialist will be giving a special lesson on how we can use EFT to overcome our cravings.
Put on your thinking caps Soulgineers, this is going to be a packed episode.

Nadia Khalil Bradley, self love teacher and author of “Little Wing” and “Origins of Truth”, joins Dawn Katzin on this week’s episode of Soulgineering Radio.
It’s time to start looking at all those thoughts running around in your brain that keep you from living a happy, loving life. On May 9th, you will have the chance to learn the tools that will kick those thoughts to the curb.
Have you ever wondered why bad things keep happening to you; why you keep finding excuses for not doing that one thing or why you have to stay in the situation you are in; or you have an internal voice that is meaner to you then you could ever be to another person; then the time to take action is here and this episode is for you.
For most of us, we are not taught how to be self loving; we were also not taught how to truly be accountable for our thoughts or actions. A lot of people are walking through life believing that they are victims to their past as well as victims to their own inner voice. If you’re ready to move beyond negative belief systems, if you’re ready to really get to the core of how to change your life, then this is an episode you don’t want to miss!

We’ve all done it, whether in a conversation with someone we live with, date, our family members, friends, co-workers, ourselves, etc…, we reacted to something that was said and the conversation quickly went a really bad direction. If we’re especially talented at reacting, the poop can hit the fan in about 0-5 seconds and all everyone involved is now angry, hurt or even worse, looking to strike back. But no one truly wins once a conversation has gone this direction. Fear not, this is a very fixable problem.
Susan Preston from “Susan Can Help Me” joins your host, Dawn Katzin for a look into how we can better communicate with each other to have much happier and more productive conversations. Whether it is a difficult conversation you need to initiate or how to be at the other end of someone speaking with you, Susan Can Help.
Listen in for “Your Moment of OM” brought to you by our friends at OM Times Magazine.
